Taking Care Of Leaky Faucet

by Scott Rodgers

Permitting the unwanted passage of fluids is what referred to as leaky. A faucet in the kitchen can also be leaky. A leaky faucet can cost you a significant amount of money if it is not taken care of right away because it will not be long until those drops have accumulated gallons of water that have gone to waste.

To fix it you first need to figure out what kind of faucet you have so that you can get the replacement parts. A common mistake is to get a wrong replacement part. Visually compare the old and new parts to make sure they are the same, even if an experienced plumbing store person picks it out for you.

Whether the faucet is leaking or not shutting, the problem to the solution is to replace the cartridge. One has to follow the steps one by one before fixing the leaky faucet. Turn off the water supply to the leaky faucet. Water shutoff’s are often located under the sink but in older homes there may only be one main water shut off for the entire house, usually located where the water pipe enters (often facing the street).

Open the faucet and let any water in the pipes drain out. Put a towel in the sink bottom. Faucets have small screws and you don’t have to lose one down the drain.

After that separate the faucet handle. Each and every handles are fixed with a small screw which has been hidden with a designer cap that can be opened with a screwdriver. Then detach the parts those were working of the faucet and examine the type of repair necessary.

There are five categories of pipes: compression, washer less, cartridge(sleeve), ceramic disk and ball class.

A compression pipe banks on rubber washers to lock the valve seat. Rubber washers tired out and has to be replaced with a new one from time to time. The other types usually called washer less pipes, has more durability but those can also create leaks. When these cartridge, ceramic-disk or ball-type faucets leak, you can only get a new O-ring or neoprene seal that making the leak to cause or completely get a new one.

O-rings has sizes from 3/8 to 5/8 inch, so it is tough to co-relate the size of the pipe with your required pipe.
