Selecting Ho Train Engines for Your Model Railroad
Selecting an ho train engine will be part of any layout. In many cases the type of train engine you prefer will dictate what the rest of your layout will be. That selection will fit into three possible groups. The early era steam engines, the diesel-electric train engines of today, or the electrical trains of the big cities. Today we will cover the ho-scale diesel engine.
One could consider nearly an endless list of factors when looking into which ho train engines or family of diesel model locomotives to use in layout, far too many factors for one article. So the rest of this article will only cover the major details.
Selecting a Road Name – Over the decades train companies have been started, merged, gone bankrupt, and reorganized. These changes have created a huge list of road names. Since each road name operated for different time periods and in different geographical areas one could add realism by only having certain road names in their layout. A layout can begin with either the road name such as Santa Fe or the preferred time period and geographic region. Now just match the road name and layout characteristics.
Selecting an Engine Manufacturer and Model – There have only been a couple major manufacturers of locomotives. Thankfully these locomotive manufactures have created plenty models (the GP7 and GP9 being some favorites). Some models had no visual changes while others were complete overhauls. Each model is created for hauling specific cargos, such as the sleek looking engines for hauling passengers or boxy looking engines that paired up with b-units to haul long heavy trains.
Selecting a Model Train Brand – Your layout will take a fair amount of time and effort. It’s a good thing a variety of ho train engine manufacturers know this and provide finely detailed ho train engines. Another factor is the selection any one particular brand may have. Some will design special edition model trains that may have an even higher degree of detail or could be an actual special model train modeled after a full-scale special edition engine.
Road Numbers – As the appeal with trains cultivated in the Wild West and into the modern era many engines became locked in history. Real road numbers can be a nice addition to model railroads and can provide further interest and a story to your layout. Some of the engines became famous for good reasons and others not so. For instance major train accidents, a freight route that has lasted for decades, various famous first time events, engines that carried presidents, and so forth could all make a specific road number famous and enjoyable to modeling after.
You may also consider using an undecorated engine shell and create a custom ho train engine. This will give you the opportunity to create an ho train engine that is unique to your layout. For instance consider designing an ho train engine that is modeled after an engine at a local museum or that is maintained by a historical society.
